About: Monument to the Christ King


The Monument to Christ the King in St Patrick’s Cathedral, Karachi, Pakistan, is a white marble building. It overlooks one of Karachi’s busiest streets – Shahrah-e-Iraq. The idea for this beauty of 54 feet was formed in 1926. It’s Karachi’s only such structure and is famous for tourists. The business Vincent Gimenez S.J. was the Parish priest of the Parish of St Patrick when, in 1925 (last Sunday, October), Pope Pius IX instituted a feast of the Christ the King. Dad. Fr. Construction


M. X Andrade designed the structure, and the construction was overlooked by August Rodrigues, the former Superintendent Engineer Public Works Department, Bombay. Anthony Coutinho and Company imported the marble for the building from Carrara, Italy.

Recent events


The monument is significantly weakened by weather and time ruination on its 80th anniversary. The monument and cathedral buildings have been separated for the most part from the boundary and sidewalks. The soil's salinity had destroyed its foundation. Part of it is damaged and can't survive its century unless steps are taken to restore and save the system.

Monument to the Christ King: Restoration


The fundraising campaign to raise funds for the renovation of the Christ the King monument was launched on 27 September 2011. The saving of the ancient cultural heritage of the Church includes Rupees of 10 million ($115 thousand). In 2012, the Parish priest Emeritus of Karachi founded the Monument Restoration and Conservation Committee. The Project Head was Menin Rodrigues, and the Technical Coordinator was Roland de Souza. In 2013, the reconstruction was finalized. The monument was blessed after restoration work had been completed on 24 November 2014, on the Feast of Christ the King, Parish priest Edgar Pena Parra, the Apostolic Nuncio to Pakistan. wOne of the main contributors to the repair work was the NED University of Engineering and Technology that costs Rs 8.5 million.
