About: Denso Hall

Denso Hall, formally The Max Denso Hall and Library, is a library situated in Karachi. Built-in 1886, it is the main library in Karachi to serve the local population. It is situated at a triangle-shaped corner created by Mohammad Ali Jinnah Road, Marriott Road, and Murad Khan Road, in the area of Saddar Town, in central Karachi.
The British government made several libraries in Karachi, for example, at Frere Hall. However, they were confined to British officers and their families. Denso Hall was built in 1886 as the first main library for the local population of Karachi. Its name was after Max Denso, who directed the Karachi Chamber of Commerce in the 1870s.
With Karachi Electric Supply Corporation’s help, Heritage Foundation Pakistan announced plans to reestablish Denso Hall as a Heritage Site in 2010. Hall’s lobby and some other fundamental structures were cleaned in 2019.

Architecture: Denso Hall

The principal architect of this structure was James Strachan, who finished the design in 1886. The primary method is Venetian Gothic, with Tudor components on the floor. When the construction was completed, it had one library, a hall on the first floor, and one room for reading on the ground floor. There is a clock on the top, a present from Rao Sahib Ramdas Morarji, a nearby Parsi who gave 1,800 books to the library. In contrast, the neighborhood Khoja community provided another 1200.
